JP made his first-class debut in the year 2001, from Cape Cobras, when he was 17 years old. After making a comeback to the South African national team, JP, unfortunately, suffered an injury on the 1 st day of the 1 st Test match against Australia in December 2012 in Brisbane. He did not take further part in Test matches and he was ruled out for six months. He missed a big part of the season of 2013 due to his injury. From the comeback from the injury, Duminy played ODI against the Netherlands and he essayed made an unbeaten 150 runs. This brilliant performance helped him to make a position for the Champions Trophy in England. After making a place in the ODI line-up it did not take a long time for him to be back in the Test format.

Duminy was selected for the tour of Pakistan in October 2013 in the UAE. He justified his return with fifty runs. He was under pressure due to his low scores in the Test matches. But he silenced his all critics with patience by scoring 123 runs against Australia in Port Elizabeth. JP continued his struggle and tried to hold fine form, in the World T20 2014 he scored 187 in 5 innings. In June/July 2014 South Africa toured Sri Lanka, JP gave a good performance he justified with his bat by amassing a century in the 1 st Test in Galle. But once again he has been troubled by a knee injury. Despite hopes and expectations, JP under-performed in the 2015 World Cup, Dummy’s only notable knock came against Zimbabwe in the opening game of the tournament.
